Intimacy with the Holy Spirit
Monday morning during the worship session at AIM,the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said: “The bedroom is not a battle field.”
This was significant. As I was meditating on this, I realized that we bring the battle we have into the place of intimacy. Intimacy speaks of total surrender. You don’t fight during intimacy. As Christians we fight the devil, fight sin and fight temptation and then think we can bring the fight into our intimate time with God. You leave feeling like God didn’t show up; He didn’t hear your prayer and He is not present. The battle is fought outside on the battle field but when you come into your house you find a place of rest and peace.
The enemy has tricked us into bringing the battle home. He has invaded our quiet time with God. It is time to take it back. We need to be learn to covet our intimate time with God.
2 Cor 13:14 May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of the Father and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you always.
The fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Do you know what the fellowship of the Holy Spirit means? The word for fellowship includes three different meanings.
- Companionship.
What does companionship looks like. When I met my wife I would drive 30 hours over a weekend just to go and see her. I longed to get to know her better. She captivated me so much that all those hours on the road seemed like nothing. I wanted to do it just to be able to spend some time with her.
What are we willing to do to spend time with the Holy Spirit? What is preventing us from companionship with the Holy Spirit? In my time with my wife we have learned about each other. The other day someone asked us to go and see a movie with them. She doesn’t like movies with blood and war and people dying in it. She like the romantic movies where they get together in the end and live happily ever after. So as soon as they asked us she looked over at me. Without even saying a word I could write three pages about what that look she gave me was saying. I politely declined and remembered we had to do something. How do I know her so well? We have been companions for twenty-seven years.
- Partnership
If I have a medical practice and I am a doctor, and a pilot wants to be part of my medical practice, it would simply not work. As a pilot he would not have what it takes to diagnose the sickness correctly. He is a professional in every way but just not qualified to do the job. Neither would we get on a plane if we knew the pilot made a partnership with the doctor and now the doctor is flying the plane you are in. Think about it. When we partner with the Holy Spirit we need to be on the same page. We ask the Holy Spirit to bless what we are doing instead of asking what he is doing and making ourselves available to help him.
We are in partnership with the Holy Spirit as he empowers us to do the ministry he has called us to do. I cannot do my own thing. I partner with him and together we minister in the power he supplies for ministry. We are co-laboring with Christ, he is not co-laboring with us.
- Intimacy
In to me see. Do you get it? It says vulnerability. Without being vulnerable you can never be intimate. You need to allow someone see you completely naked. You need to get real with the Holy Spirit. He already knows you better than you know yourself. Stop pretending things is okay when it is not. Being real creates the place where intimacy happens. The product from intimacy is bearing fruit. As children of God we are expected to bear fruit. Without being intimate with the Holy Spirit we stay barren and unfruitful. The fruit of your life proofs what kind of intimacy you are living. Reading the word and waiting on God, meditating on his word are intimate times with God. Do you want to be more fruitful?
Here is a list of things you can do to be more intimate:
– Know that it is what God wants for you
– Overcome your fear of being vulnerable
– Study the word, meditate on it day and night
– Trust the Holy Spirit with your heart and your feelings
– Make time to be alone with Him
These are a few keys to remember.
The price for his presence is time!
The purpose for his presence is change!
The product of his presence is power.
Do you really want this? Be ready to be changed. Be ready to see the power of God manifest in your life!
